Soulmate Heart Pendant

I actually carved this little bit of wearable sculpture a while ago but I’ve just put it up on my Etsy shop for sale as otherwise it is just going to sit around doing nothing. It is a heart formed from two souls coming together. Carved in Boxwood it has a lovely texture. Continue reading Soulmate Heart Pendant

Ordination Gift

Last year I found that my sister, with whome I hadn’t spoken for a long time had been ordained as a priest in the Anglican Church. This didn’t surprise me as I had always expected her to take that direction in her life. So, what would more natural than for me to carve her a … Continue reading Ordination Gift

Health and safety

So, here we are, having just walked to the Red Beach at the Southern end of Santorini. Part of the cliff has obviously fallen off onto the path so they have erected a rickety handrail and a lightweight rope. It struck me that if this were in the UK they’d have closed the path, erected … Continue reading Health and safety

Update on my latest rosebud

Well it’s coming along, still looks like a chopped up lump of wood to anyone else, but I know what I see. The sepals are beginning to get separated from the bud. Soon enough they will start to look much more realistic. Hopefully have it done by the end of the week. Continue reading Update on my latest rosebud

Portable hobby

Ok, yesterday morning we walked up the mountain to the ancient city of -Thera. Quite a strenuous climb in places but the mountain was only about 400m high so not really that high. But I was able to work on my current rosebud for most of it. I wasn’t doing any of the detailed work … Continue reading Portable hobby

Another rose in the making.

I have found a nice bit of boxwood in the garage and decided it’s time for another rose. I need something to keep my hands busy next week while I’m away on the beach. It’s starting to take shape It’s going to be a simple rosebud, much like this one but smaller I’ll keep you … Continue reading Another rose in the making.

A fickle view of carving tools

I have said on a number of occasions that I have found my ideal carving knife and gone on to explain why. Well I have figured out that actually there is no such thing. I am fickle and change my mind often about what I like and dislike in a carving knife. I have a … Continue reading A fickle view of carving tools

What is “The Best” edge profile, grind, sharpening method?

As far as I am concerned the convex grind edge is the simplest and easiest to hone and keep sharp. Paradoxically it is also the most difficult to hone and keep sharp. Why is that? Well it is all down to the skill and expertise of the person driving the edge. I have spent a … Continue reading What is “The Best” edge profile, grind, sharpening method?

Every house should have its mouse

I believe that every house should have it’s own mouse. I often carve sketches of mice and leave them in people’s houses that we visit. I have carved mice for family and friends as well as just for fun. My late father took up wood turning when he retired and then spent the next 20 … Continue reading Every house should have its mouse

My ideal general carving knife

Yippee!!!!! I’ve done it, I’ve finally got my perfect general carving knife. You might be forgiven for thinking that’s a bit of a big statement but I have been trying to get it right for years and I’m finally happy with the results. I’ve previously posted about a variation on a skew chisel that I … Continue reading My ideal general carving knife
