You may already know that I often carve mice, a little odd you may think given that my trademark is a hedgehog but hey ho.

Anyway, these little guys are the quickest mice I carve, they take about 30 minutes each and I thought I’d show the process.
So, start with a length of stick, roughly 25mm (1 inch) in diameter and around 40mm long. The ends are cut at an angle as shown.

Two chamfer cuts to define the tip of the nose

Stop cuts behind the ears and then cut the slope of the shoulders

A very cut to undercut the chin

Continue the vee cut around the sides of the head under the ears

Two concave cuts to form the fronts of the ears and the cheeks and then round off the profile of the ears

Slim down the sides of the head and start to shape the backs of the ears.
From the on it’s a case of refining the shape and smoothing cuts to give the neck and shoulders some definition.
The finished article then gets eyes (black ink) and a coat of whatever finish you like to use. This is Boiled Linseed Oil.
