Yippee!!!!! I’ve done it, I’ve finally got my perfect general carving knife. You might be forgiven for thinking that’s a bit of a big statement but I have been trying to get it right for years and I’m finally happy with the results.
I’ve previously posted about a variation on a skew chisel that I really like to carve with and I then increased it in size and the sweep of the blade to come up with a broad bladed version that is just great for big planing cuts. But now I have got just the right combination of grind, profile and ergonomics to be able to confidently think about selling them.

It’s a piece of repurposed file set into a piece of antler. The blade has an almost zero grind and is sharp enough to shave. The basic requirements for me are.
- Short blade
- Comfortable, textured grip
- Edge of blade to be skewed upwards for either knife cut or chisel style push cut.
- Tip needs to be tapered for detail work.
- Blade needs to be thick and rigid
- Shallow grind
- No plunge grind as I don’t want any bits of steel to foul with the workpiece.
- Overall length of less than 150mm (6 inches).
These are the previous two knives that this one is an evolution of.

But this is the best!!
