This is my most recent toy. It’s very rough and ready, a really simple shape, which is very very loosely based on a puuko. I’ve done a convex grind and then differentially hardened it.
It’s made from a rasp with oddly curved teeth. The handle was treated to a thorough brushing with a wire brush on an angle grinder to give it that, “worn” look and to round off any corners. It has rounded off and dented all the teeth as well as smoothing the sharp edges.
Once the blade was shaped, ground and then heat treated to harden it I just sanded it lightly with a really fine grit to get rid of the worst but left the pitting and etching caused by the fire. I’ve roughly polished it with some Autosol and then left it at that. I kind of like the aged look it has.
I like the very rustic look and feel and the fact that the edge is now really hard. It’s the only polished bit of the knife. It carves really well and feels nice in the hand. As with all the knives I’ve made I only really make them for myself so they are shaped as I want them rather than to follow fashionable or common patterns. I’ve no doubt this one will evolve as I use it and learn the feel of it. I may even put scales on it at some stage but at the moment I’m kind of liking the basic look and feel.
All of my knives evolve as I use them. I suppose they could all be referred to as being Works in process.
That term basically means I can get away with not putting in too much time making them look nice.
